Leo Spauls releases his second album in a unique collaboration with Bowie’s pianist Mike Garson.
Spauls, who two years ago released his debut EP ”Alla dagar jag väntat” (Tired of waiting) with an alternative Pride song to Stockholm Pride 2016, is back with a new album featuring Mike Garson on piano.
”We were planning a new album in Swedish,” Spauls says, ”but when I got in contact with Mike, I realised that we were going to do something entirely different. Mike has been an idol of mine ever since I heard him play on the ”David, Live in Philadelphia” album (1974), the first record I ever bought.”
Not an obvious choice for a teenager in the early 90s, but it got Spauls really into the music of David Bowie. ”I got the chance to talk to Bowie once,” Spauls says. ”It was just before his 50th birthday, and I was doing a phone interview for a Swedish music magazine. I was young and not a very talented journalist. I should have gone to New York to meet him in person. I regret not doing that.”
Spauls contacted Mike Garson through Twitter. After a few discussions through Skype and email, Garson said yes. ”I couldn’t believe it,” Spauls says. ”I have only released one album, and here I am already working with one of the world’s finest musicians.”
Having written pop songs for almost 25 years, Spauls decided to release his debut album last year. ”The dream was too big,” Spauls says. ”I couldn’t see myself in it, so I chose a life in the theatre instead. But when Bowie suddenly died two years ago, I said to myself, ”You must do something with the music you have written – one day you will be gone, and it will all be for nothing.”
Mike Garson is currently touring the UK with a live version of Bowie’s ”Aladdin Sane”. ”We will try to meet up in Birmingham at the end of November,” Spauls says, who is planning a tour of his own. ”I was at BBC Introducing @ ExCeL London in October talking to the BBC Introducing team. I was advised to come back with a tour, so that’s the next step.”
The single, ”Heaven’s Deep Blue Sky” will be released on 11 May and the album 8 June.
